Overview
Hato supports people who are struggling to cope with depression or bad things that have happened to them by allowing them to anonymously express their feelings in a letter and then receiving positive letters back from other anonymous users to support their feeling and empower them.
For people who are happy at the moment can be even happier if they reply back the letters from anonymous friends. Furthermore, they can send a balloon with positive messages to each other at any time.
Duration: October - November 2020
There was a big event coming up in the next month. It was LINEHACK 2020; the hackathon that encouraged developer to use LINE API to create an innovative product that is impactful, usable, and help grow the business. My friend from YWC (Young Webmaster Camp) sparked my interest. So we grouped and began work on the first proposal submission.
I am very proud to introduce the members. They're fantastic and super cool✨❄️
Gyūdon : Japanese dish consisting of a bowl of rice topped with beef and onion simmered in a mildly sweet sauce flavored with dashi, soy sauce and mirin. In Thai language called ‘Kaow Nha Nua’
I was so lucky that all of us have a common interest in mental health, so we did the brainstorming session two times and got a rough idea about a safe space where people can say, write anything in their minds and earn back some positive power.
We submitted a proposal to LINEHACK 2020, with the idea, and it was passed on to the finalist.
The hackathon had started!
We had two weeks to develop the prototype in order to pitch and demo it on demo day, which was a big day for us.
Hato is a Japanese word that means heart and pigeon. Because it is common to interpret pigeons as messengers, we decided to have a pigeon as a mascot to present the product's feature.
We did not want to create an MVP (minimum viable product) during this hackathon, but rather an MLP (minimum loveable product). That is why I spent time on visual design to create a story that was embedded in the product.
Entry point design
The product’s concept is ‘Safe space’. So I want those who visit the site to feel like they are in their personal space.
First draft
High-Fidelity
We had four unique features. We planned to implement the Feel & Relieve and Mailbox features and launch them in the real market before the demo day to collect feedback and clarify the product's opportunity.
Learning something new!
It was my first time using lottie. I love it💕 Thank you to Lookkid (the developer), He introduced me to Lottie. That was a big change to Hato! The animation brought our product to life and allowed Hato to easily express his personality
my Lottie animation
We were able to launch two features two days before the demo day. We had to thank Fluk profusely. He gathered 90 early adopters who later became valued customers.
There were 35 relief letters sent and 116 reply letters.
As mailbox administrators, we read and reviewed all letters before they were sent. We were lovestuck with those letters. The messages contain love, a warm hug, positive energy, and the assurance that they will never be alone. I feel like a dream has come true; this proves the existence of a safe space.
We did not win an award at the hackathon, but we were happy to launch this project, which helped many people. It was extremely rewarding for us.
One of relief letters from anonymous friend
(I need to thank all my friends who responded to my letter. I didn't know where else to show my appreciation, so I wrote this letter.)
They’re sentimental.
These are some of the messages that users have sent back to us.

Hato is meaningful to my soul. I'll be grateful if you continue the project because Hato and the response letter helped me get through that difficult day.
